Perhaps you're a person who took a home pregnancy test or two or 10 of them just to be sure it was really true, " Am I really Pregnant?".

Those little tests start the story of a new life, just full of questions, curiosity and wonderment.

Soon the thoughts of who will care for you and your baby during pregnancy and attend your birth will come to mind. Will you choose a doctor or midwife, hospital, home or birth center? Consulting with midwives is ALWAYS supportive and educational and you just might discover, something you might not have thought of before; Having your baby in your own home.

Choosing a home birth midwife: What to look for

Here are a few helpful hints at finding a midwife that you can feel confident and trust.

Choosing a home birth midwife: What to look for

  • Search " home birth midwife in your local city." and midwife association or organization in your state or providence.

  • Consult/interview with at least 3 midwives. Find the one you connect with which has the skills and experience you are looking for.

  • Ask friends or family who they used and choose the one you connect best with.

WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK

  • Who are they licensed or certified through?

  • How long have you been a midwife and how many births, after licensure have you been a primary midwife for?

  • Why did you become a midwife and what is your philosophy?

  • What complications have you dealt with?

  • What is your transfer rate and why?

  • What is your role in a transfer?

  • What equipment do you carry?

  • What tests, ultrasounds, use of doppler, waterbirth, post-dates, laws are non-negotiable in your practice?

  • Do you use a second midwife or skilled assistant with you at births?

  • What does prenatal care look like in your practice?

  • What does postpartum care look like in your practice? Do you care for my baby as well as myself?

  • What are your fees and how do you accept payment? Are their any discount rates for early payment?

  • Look at 5-10 super important areas of prenatal care, your birth or postpartm and share these with them. Listen to their views on your wishes.

  • Choose one who listens to your concerns and respects your birth desires.

Final Decision and Confidence

  • Trust your instincts when making the final decision on a homebirth midwife.

  • Feel confident and empowered in your choice for a positive birth experience.
