🌿Gratitude in Every Direction: A Practice That Transforms Your Life

Recently, I had a beautiful and unexpected moment of reflection.

I was listening to a song by Karen Drucker called “I’m So Grateful.”In the song, she repeats:

“Gratitude before me, gratitude behind me,gratitude to the left of me, gratitude to the right of me,gratitude above me, gratitude below me,gratitude within me, gratitude all around me.”

As I sat with these words, I began to gently explore each direction she named.

Looking Ahead: A Vision of What Is Possible

When I turned my awareness to what was ahead of me, I saw something beautiful.

There was joy. A sense of possibility.A deep desire to continue living into a life I could imagine and create.

It felt expansive… hopeful… full of light.

Looking Behind: A Shift in Perspective

Then I became curious about what was behind me.

At first, I noticed resistance.

A quiet voice inside said, “Don’t look there.”Because behind me held memories of pain… challenges… trauma… sadness.

But instead of turning away, I chose to shift my perspective.

I asked myself:

What good came from these experiences?

And as I leaned in with curiosity instead of fear, something began to change.

I started to see:

  • The strength I had built

  • The wisdom I had gained

  • The lives I had touched

  • The families I had supported as they welcomed their babies

  • The programs I had created to grow and support midwifery

I saw the woman I had become.

A woman of love.Of gratitude.Of kindness.Of deep centeredness in truth.

The more I looked for the good… the more I could see it.

And what once felt heavy began to feel meaningful.

Looking to the Left and Right: Honoring Both Sides of Self

Next, I looked to my left and right.

I began to notice the balance of my own nature.

To my left, I felt my creative, emotional, and spiritual self—the part of me that feels deeply, imagines, connects, and trusts.

To my right, I recognized my analytical, grounded, and action-oriented self—the part that builds, works, organizes, and brings things into form.

Both sides held moments of challenge… and moments of triumph.

And instead of judging either side, I felt gratitude for both.

Because together, they have shaped the life I live today.

Gratitude Within: Discovering Joy

Then I turned inward.

And what I found… was joy.

A quiet, steady, beautiful joy that has been created through the life I’ve lived.

Not because everything was perfect. But because everything contributed.

Every experience… every lesson… every moment.

All of it led me here.

A Reflection for You

As I sat in this awareness, I began to wonder…

What have you experienced in your life that has helped you

become a greater version of yourself?

Perhaps there are moments you still question.

Maybe even a birth experience that didn’t go the way you had hoped.

If so, I gently invite you to take a heart-to-heart look.

With curiosity.With compassion.With openness.

Ask yourself:

What good can I find here? What did this grow in me?

Who did this help me become?

Even the most challenging experiences can hold seeds of growth, strength, and transformation.

When you find even a small piece of good…offer gratitude to it.

And then… smile.

3 Simple Ways to Invite More Gratitude Into Your Life

Gratitude is powerful.

What we give our attention to… grows.

Here are three simple ways to begin inviting more gratitude—and more of what you desire—into your life:

1. Daily Gratitude Journaling

Take a few moments each day to write down what you are grateful for.

It doesn’t have to be big.Even the smallest moments matter.

2. Look for the Good

In any situation, condition, or circumstance—there is always something to learn or grow from.

Train your mind to look for it.

3. Pause, Breathe, and Reset

When you notice your inner voice becoming critical or negative:

Pause.Breathe in through your nose… and out slowly. Then gently replace the thought with something kind, supportive, and true.

You Are Magnificent

As you begin to practice gratitude in every direction—before you, behind you, around you, and within you—you may begin to notice something beautiful unfolding.

More peace.More clarity.More joy.

And a deeper connection to yourself.

Remember…

You are a magnificent person.

And your life—every part of it—has helped shape the greatness within you.
